A new edition pays tribute to the 60-year-old Little Golden Book series with a very fresh take on the Mother Goose nursery rhymes. Artist Dan Yaccarino tackles 34 traditional rhymes with one unconventional picture per rhyme. The cartoonish drawings are brightly colored, usually with a slyly ironic twist somewhere in the illustration. Hey diddle diddle depicts a beatnik cat in a black beret and turtleneck fiddling contentedly in the foreground while an angry cop runs through a park after a dish and a spoon. A relaxed Mother Goose wears sunglasses and a cocky pose as she cruises jauntily along through the sky on the back of an enormous goose. Skinny Jack Spratt`s morbidly obese wife sits in a diner wearing an unflattering polka dot dress, and Tom, Tom the Piper`s son taunts his visibly annoyed neighbors by blithely sitting in a window playing his clarinet. Yaccarino`s deftly clever artwork evokes a 1950s retro feel. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.
